TO BOLDLY GO ...
Thursday June 26th - Friday June 27th, 2026

The Second Joint AREIAC / AULRE conference

The University of Exeter

The Association of University Lecturers in Religion and Education (AULRE) and Association of Religious Education Inspectors, Advisers and Consultants (AREIAC) is delighted to announce its 2025 joint conference, at The University of Exeter on 26th and 27th June 2025.

In a time of climate and ecological breakdown, of social and political upheavals and increased polarization internationally, we address the question as to what a high-quality education in religion and worldviews can boldly offer to education at this time.

Our conference brings together those with an interest in Religious Education - including researchers, teacher educators, advisers and teachers. Those working in aligned fields such as Education Studies, Moral Education, Philosophy, Religious Studies, and Theology as well as from within Childhood and Youth studies may also be interested in attending and offering presentations.

We invite proposals from practitioners and researchers, foracademic papers as well as practical classroom teaching and curriculum ideas that will be presented in chaired / facilitated parallel sessions. Questions about submissions should be made to AULRE Chair Pat Hannam (p.hannam@exeter.ac.uk) or AREIAC co-chairs Jan McGuire and Ruth Everett (chair@areiac.org.uk)

Proposals will address the conference theme and may focus on one or more of the following questions:

  • How might religious education respond to the climate crisis, societal injustice and/or to social and political polarisation?

  • What pedagogical proposals are emerging?

  • What fruitful intersections are there between theory, policy and practice in RE?

  • What might a bold and inclusive religious education look like?

  • What bold educational ideas are emerging for teaching religion, values, ethics and worldviews?

Abstracts (250-300 words) for proposals for individual research papers, or symposia of 2-4 linked papers or facilitated practical teaching and curriculum ideas session of up to 20 minutes, should be sent to the AULRE Chair: p.hannam@exeter.ac.uk by 17th April 2024.

The result of the review process will be sent to contributors by 1st May 2024. Papers presented at the AULRE conference should be as finished as possible. Following the conference and a peer review process, there will be an opportunity for papers to be published in a special edition of the Journal of Religious Education.

We look forward to welcoming all those with an interest with religion in education, including researchers, teacher educators, advisers and teachers and those working in aligned fields such as Education Studies, Moral Education, Philosophy, Religious Studies, and Theology as well as from within Childhood and Youth studies.
